2025)/the photos at the exhibition “What to talk about, when we talk about us”(Tokyo University of the Arts, Tokyo, 2025)
This sculptural work gathers and fixes personal belongings from the artist’s life prior to gender transition—spanning from kindergarten to high school—within a basket woven from a metal lattice.
From the surfaces of each object, markers of place, time, and gender appear to be legible; however, the work questions whether such surface readings risk being reduced to normative “narratives,” caught within the wide mesh of the grid.
This work was made in the context of a curated group exhibition that expressed opposition to the escalating discrimination against transgender people, and that created a shared space to reflect on the capacity for harm in oneself and in others.
